Kirk Gauthier There are bands and projects that come and go who, throughout the course of their careers, you can come to expect as a fan what each single, EP, and album will sound like. More often than not, they will follow some relatively predictable path as their particular styles grow and change over the years. Or their styles won’t change at all, merely fine-tuning their already well-oiled machines into something just east of perfection. Not Mothman and the Thunderbirds! Favorite track: Gazer.

sablewyvern "I just came across a cool cover of this," I said at work today, when the original version of All Star started playing. "You should play it," they told me. At first, there was amusement. Then there was shock, and even fear, for they were not ready to have the thin façade of their false reality stripped away. As for me, I simply sat there, nodding, with an idiot grin on my face, for I had stepped through, into my happy place. Favorite track: All Star.

caggac There is something very special about bands who ignore genres and kinda just say yes to them all. This EP is catchy, spacey, and dark in the best ways. It feels like being at a dark carnival in outer space. AND they round it out with a total groove of an instrumental? Professionals. Favorite track: Liminal Spacetime Continuum (Bonus - Instrumental Demo).

loveloththsartgazebo Like the bass tone, Tinea Homo et Tonitrus Avis mean business! Luckily for you and me, that doesn't exclude the fun factor which was always present in their sound but this has been brought to another level with the extra based cover of "All Star".

Fan of all them tracks but "Gazer" stands (and floats) above with a chorus powerful enough to shame newer Mastodon. I.E. it fucking rocks, check it out. All of it! Favorite track: Gazer.

Wake up to the sound of static breaking the air The television’s broken and we don’t have a spare Gazing at the colors projecting through the screen Slowly slipping back into the daily routine I get better with time Strange things happen in the back of my mind I was up in the clouds Nothing’s been the same since I came back down Going back through places that I don’t recognize Moving through a maze that higher powers devised I can feel them watching as I try to escape FIlmed it all and sold it on a video tape I get better with time Strange things happen in the back of my mind I was up in the clouds Nothing’s been the same since I came back down

about

Mothman and The Thunderbirds have returned once again, this time with the space-themed EP Gazer. The EP features the band's original track “Gazer”, a space rockin' song that is equal parts adrenaline and psychedelia. The new song is accompanied by two covers that keep with the cosmic theme: a mystifying version of Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and a totally tripped out take on The Byrds’ “Mr. Spaceman”.

The band welcomes back Joe Sobieski, who previously sang on their 2021 track "Cloud Giant". Joe penned the lyrics to "Gazer" and sings on the verses for that track and "All Star". His clean yet animated vocals provide a potent contrast to project leader Alex Parkinson's explosive choruses. Egor Lappo also returns at the helm of production duties, having previously elevated the band's sound on their 2021 CKY cover and 2022 split EP with World Eaters. Egor's mixing and mastering skills shine through once again, tripling down on the cosmic sound Mothman and The Thunderbirds peddle throughout this EP.

When asked for comment on the Gazer EP, Alex had this to say: "this EP is very trippy, and very, very fun!" Pressed for something more insightful to say, he added: "we've been hard at work on the next album, so this EP was a nice break. "Gazer" was a song Joe and I wrote in 2018 that we unearthed and recorded earlier this year - I'm super proud of how it turned out! We had a great time putting our own strange spin on those covers too. This EP is a fun pitstop for the band as we prepare to embark on our next big sonic adventure!"
